ADD / ADHD

Understanding attention, focus, and energy — and learning how to thrive

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental conditions that affect attention, organisation, impulse control, and emotional regulation. They are not a sign of laziness, lack of intelligence, or poor motivation.

Many children, adolescents, and adults with ADD or ADHD grow up feeling misunderstood or criticised for behaviours that are outside their control. With the right understanding and support, people with ADHD can learn to work with their brain rather than against it.

At SGI Psychology in Preston (Northern Suburbs of Melbourne), our psychologists provide effective, evidence-based support for individuals and families affected by ADD and ADHD.

How ADD / ADHD can present

ADD and ADHD can look different in each person. Common experiences include:

  • difficulty sustaining attention

  • distractibility or “mind wandering”

  • forgetfulness or losing things

  • trouble starting or finishing tasks

  • disorganisation and time management difficulties

  • impulsivity or acting without thinking

  • restlessness or inner agitation

  • emotional reactivity or frustration

  • low self-esteem due to repeated criticism

  • feeling overwhelmed by everyday demands

Some people are more hyperactive; others are mainly inattentive. Many experience a combination of both.

ADD / ADHD across the lifespan

ADHD is often identified in childhood, but many people reach adulthood without a diagnosis. Adults may notice difficulties with:

  • work performance or consistency

  • managing responsibilities

  • maintaining routines

  • relationships

  • emotional regulation

  • self-confidence

Late diagnosis can be both a relief and a source of grief. Therapy can help make sense of past experiences and build a more supportive future.

How therapy can help

Psychological support can help you:

  • understand how your brain works

  • reduce shame and self-blame

  • build practical organisational skills

  • improve focus and task completion

  • manage emotional reactivity

  • strengthen routines and habits

  • improve relationships and communication

  • develop confidence and self-acceptance

Therapy is not about changing who you are. It is about helping you function in ways that suit your strengths.

Your psychologist may draw from:

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

  • Skills-based coaching approaches
