Phobic Disorders

Understanding intense fears and learning how to feel safe again

Phobias are strong, persistent fears of specific objects, situations, or activities that feel overwhelming and out of proportion to the actual level of danger. Even when a person knows the fear is irrational, the body reacts as if there is a real threat.

Common phobias include fear of:

  • flying

  • driving

  • heights

  • needles or medical procedures

  • animals (such as dogs, spiders, snakes)

  • enclosed spaces (lifts, tunnels)

  • open or crowded places

  • vomiting, choking, or illness

Phobias can quietly shape daily life. Many people organise their world around avoidance, often without realising how much freedom has been lost.

At SGI Psychology in Preston (Northern Suburbs of Melbourne), our psychologists provide evidence-based therapy to help people reduce fear, regain confidence, and move freely through life again.

How phobias develop

Phobias can develop through:

  • a frightening or traumatic experience

  • learning from others’ fears

  • repeated stress or anxiety

  • biological sensitivity to threat

  • imagination and anticipation of danger

Over time, avoidance strengthens the fear. Each time a feared situation is avoided, the brain learns that avoidance is “necessary,” reinforcing the cycle.

How phobias affect daily life

Phobias may lead to:

  • avoidance of everyday activities

  • disruption to work, study, or travel

  • dependence on others

  • constant anticipation and worry

  • panic symptoms in feared situations

  • feelings of shame or frustration

  • reduced confidence and independence

Many people live with phobias for years before seeking help, believing they must simply “put up with it.” Effective treatment is available.

How therapy helps with phobias

Therapy focuses on helping you:

  • understand how fear works in the brain and body

  • reduce the power of avoidance

  • learn to calm the nervous system

  • gradually face feared situations safely

  • retrain the brain’s threat response

  • rebuild confidence and independence

  • feel more in control of your life

With the right support, many people experience significant and lasting improvement.

Evidence-based approaches we use

Your psychologist may draw from:

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

  • Exposure-based therapy (gentle and paced)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Mindfulness-based strategies

  • Psychoeducation about anxiety and fear

Exposure is always collaborative and respectful. You are never forced into situations you are not ready for.
